An Overview of Hunan University of Humanities, Science and Technology
Introduction and Location: Hunan University of Humanities, Science and Technology (HUHST), established in 1978, is a state-owned provincial university of higher education approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education. It is located in Loudi, a newly built city in central Hunan province. With its beautiful scenery, pleasant climate, rich resources and convenient transportation, Loudi holds the reputation of a botanical garden city and one of the most livable cities in China.
Campus and Facilities: HUHST occupies an area coverage of about 700,000 m2 (1,050 Chinese acres), including 363,000 m2constructed campus buildings. Its total teaching and research equipments have reached the value of 732 million yuan (RMB). The collection in the library includes 1,003,000 books, over 1,400 Chinese and foreign periodicals, 720,000 e-books and 20 editions of academic periodical database.
Disciplines and Courses: HUHST possesses 16 faculties and 16 research centers. Its 39 undergraduate courses cover 7 comprehensive disciplines, naming Art, Science, Technology, Education, Business, Management and Law . The university has 2 provincial priority construction disciplines, 2 first-category featured program construction pilots of the Chinese Ministry of Education,2 provincial “Eleventh Five-Year” prestigious specialties, 6 provincial excellent courses, 1 provincial research base of philosophy and social science, 2 provincial demonstration laboratory, 82 social practice placement-centers, 6 provincial excellent placement-centers, and 1 practice placement-center of dragon & lion performance authorized by the Chinese Ministry of Education.
Staff: Of its 1137 staff members, there are 710 full-time teachers, including 1 Academician of Chinese Engineering Academy (the Honorary President of HUHST), 77 professors, 239 associate professors, 43 doctors, 458 masters, 6 foreign teachers, 53 guest professors, 34 provincial key young teachers and 6 candidates of provincial key young teachers. Also, HUHST has 1 First Level Intellectual ,1 Second Level Intellectual and 6 Third Level Intellectuals of New Centennial Hunan 121 Project, 5 “Zeng Xianzi Educational Fund Prize” owners, 1 “Provincial Xu Teli Educational Prize” winner and 3 government special allowance grantors.
Research: Over the past four years, HUHST staff members have published over 81 academic books, compiled 36 text books, edited 20 text books with joint effort; published 4236 journal articles with 587 published in national key periodicals, 127 in focal periodicals abroad, 141 cited by the three international citation index systems SCI, EI and ISTP and 36 reprinted by Abstracts of New China and the Photocopy Documents of Renmin University of China. HUHST has taken the lead of 815 national and provincial research projects, which incorporate 6 subsidized by National Social Science Funds, 8 sponsored by National Natural Science Funds, 2 supported by the Chinese Ministry of Education and 186 funded by Hunan province. In addition, 86 awards are achieved in relation with “Teaching Achievements”, “Social Science Achievements” and “Technological Advanced Achievements”. “The Journal of Hunan University of Humanities, Science and Technology" has been promoted as “the national top hundred social science journals”.
Students: HUHST recruits students all over China. Currently there are 13,583 full-time students, 7,800 part-time adult students and around 40,000 alumni. HUHST aims at educating talents with the mission of “Solid Foundation, Relaxed Admission, Strong Competence and Top Qualification”. Over the past few years, students have won outstanding awards -- 36 national prizes (12 first prizes, 21 second prizes) and 220 provincial prizes --in different kinds of competitions, such as, mathematical module competition, electrical design contest, English speech competition, “Challenging Cup” competition, university sports meeting, art festivals, computer rank test, English rank test, calligraphy competitions, dragon and lion dance performances and so on. Traditional Chinese sports events like orienteering and dragon and lion dance performances rank at the top in China. Furthermore, HUHST has achieved remarkable outcomes by establishing international academic relationships with foreign universities from the US, UK,Australia, Singapore and Thailand in the fields of teaching, learning and research.
Administration: With firm and active work in Party construction and ideological & political education, administration in HUHST has been strengthened by self-improvement. Its influence in China has been increased with successive awards conferred, such as “One of the First Hunan Provincial Cultivated and Civilized Universities”, “Hunan Provincial Cultivated and Civilized Work Unit”, “Hunan Provincial Advanced Grassroots Communist Party Organization”, “National Fitness Advanced Unit”, “Hunan Provincial Botanic Garden Unit” and “the National College Students Social Practice Advanced Unit” (9 times).
